Finals context

The 2012-13 Rio Grande Valley Vipers put together one of the most dominant championship runs in league history, finishing the regular season 35-15 with a ten-game winning streak to close the year, then sweeping through the entire playoffs -- Maine and Tulsa in earlier rounds, then Santa Cruz in the Finals -- without dropping a single game, making them the first team in the modern era of the league to go undefeated across an entire postseason. The Finals sweep itself was comfortable rather than dramatic: Rio Grande Valley won Game 1 112-102 on April 25 and closed out the title two nights later with a 102-91 win, giving the franchise its second championship in four seasons. The Vipers were coached by Nick Nurse, who would go on to considerably greater fame years later as head coach of the Toronto Raptors' 2019 NBA championship team and, later still, of the Philadelphia 76ers -- making this 2012-13 title an important early credential in a coaching career that would eventually reach the very top of the sport. Guard Andrew Goudelock was one of the Vipers' standout performers during the run, though no formal Finals MVP award existed at this point in league history (the honor would not be introduced until 2014-15), so his contributions, like those of every champion before that season, went without an individual postseason trophy attached. This championship extended Houston's broader identity-building project with its Rio Grande Valley affiliate, continuing the aggressive, analytically informed, three-point-centric offensive style that general manager Daryl Morey's Rockets front office had begun installing at the minor-league level a few seasons earlier under previous coach Chris Finch. Nurse's Vipers, like Finch's before them, led the D-League in three-point attempts by a wide margin, part of a stylistic throughline connecting all of Rio Grande Valley's championship teams across this decade regardless of which coach happened to be running the huddle in a given season. For Santa Cruz, the Finals defeat came in just the Golden State Warriors' D-League affiliate's second season of existence; the Warriors had entered the league only the year before, and this loss represented an early growing pain in what would soon become one of the league's most consistently competitive single-affiliate operations. Santa Cruz would return to the Finals the very next two seasons, in 2013-14 and 2014-15, finally breaking through for the franchise's first title in the latter -- meaning this 2012-13 defeat to a Vipers team playing a genuinely undefeated postseason was, in retrospect, an early and instructive step in Santa Cruz's own development into a perennial contender.
