Finals context
The 2024-25 Finals gave the Stockton Kings, the Sacramento Kings' G League affiliate, the first championship in franchise history, capping a three-game series against the Osceola Magic (Orlando's affiliate) that swung dramatically in Stockton's favor after an early setback. Osceola won Game 1, but Stockton answered decisively in Game 2, winning 144-126 to even the series, before the two teams met for a decisive Game 3 in Florida that produced one of the more dramatic comebacks in recent Finals history. Stockton trailed by 15 points at one stretch and was still down 82-73 entering the fourth quarter, having trailed 55-49 at halftime, before mounting a complete turnaround to win the game 118-110 and claim the title. Guard Mason Jones anchored the finish, finishing with 19 points and 13 assists to earn Finals MVP honors, while Dexter Dennis came off the bench for 23 points and 6 rebounds, forward Terry Taylor added 22 points and 12 rebounds, and Isaac Jones -- on assignment from the parent Sacramento Kings -- contributed 21 points and 13 rebounds. Center Skal Labissière, a veteran of several NBA rosters by this point in his career, chipped in 12 points and 7 rebounds off Stockton's bench as well. For Osceola, Ethan Thompson led all scorers with 28 points and Myron Gardner added 20 points and 14 rebounds, but neither could prevent Stockton's fourth-quarter surge. Head coach Quinton Crawford credited his team's depth and poise for the comeback, saying afterward that "we have the ability to execute -- all 15 guys on our roster -- so we weren't going to end this thing," a summary that fit a game in which five different Stockton players reached double figures in the decisive contest. The championship marked a significant milestone for the Sacramento Kings' player-development pipeline, giving the organization its first G League title since establishing Stockton as its single affiliate and validating years of investment in a market that, unlike several of the league's original small-city, unaffiliated 2000s-era franchises, was built from the outset around a direct, permanent NBA parent-club relationship. As the 23rd and most recent champion recorded in this file's coverage (through the 2024-25 season, with 2019-20 canceled by COVID-19 and no champion crowned), Stockton's title also stood as a fitting closing chapter to nearly a quarter-century of the league's evolution: from eight standalone, unaffiliated Southeastern minor-league clubs in 2001-02, through multiple rebrands (NBDL to D-League to G League) and a nearly universal shift to the one-team, one-NBA-affiliate model, to a league in 2024-25 where every Finals participant, Stockton and Osceola alike, existed as a direct, purpose-built extension of an NBA franchise's own roster-development machinery.
