2017 FIBA Intercontinental Cup result: Iberostar Tenerife (Spain) def. Guaros de Lara (Venezuela), 76-71, at San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Canary Islands, Spain.

Sourcing caveat: An earlier pass recorded this final's score as 89-76. Deeper research (this project's standard 2+ independent source bar) found three independent contemporary sources -- FIBA's own recap, Spanish outlet SoloBasket, and Venezuelan outlet El Impulso -- consistently reporting the actual score as Iberostar Tenerife 76, Guaros de Lara 71. Corrected to 76-71 accordingly.

Final context

The 27th edition, contested as a single game on September 24, 2017 at the Santiago Martin arena in San Cristobal de La Laguna on Tenerife, brought together hosts Iberostar Tenerife -- champion of the newly created Basketball Champions League, in just its inaugural 2016-17 season -- against Guaros de Lara of Venezuela, the reigning FIBA Americas League champion and defending Intercontinental Cup titleholder. As in 2016, the EuroLeague champion (Fenerbahce, winner of the 2016-17 EuroLeague final) was barred from taking part because of the ongoing governance dispute between FIBA and EuroLeague Basketball, leaving Tenerife to represent Europe instead. Guaros came out firing, building an early 10-point lead at 12-2 behind baskets from Gregory Echenique, Mario Little, and Nate Robinson, and stretched the margin to 17-6 before Tenerife answered with an 8-0 run of its own. The Venezuelan visitors still led at the break, 39-36, thanks to a Zach Graham three-pointer right before the halftime buzzer. Tenerife took control in the third quarter, with center Mike Tobey exploiting his interior size advantage and guard Nicolas Richotti hitting from three-point range to help the Spanish hosts move ahead for good. Guaros mounted several late rallies -- pulling within two possessions more than once in the fourth quarter -- but could not complete the comeback, undone in part by a poor night at the free-throw line (missing 12 of 20 attempts) and Tenerife's rebounding edge, 45-35 on the glass. Contemporary reporting from FIBA and Spanish outlet SoloBasket described a tight, hard-fought final decided in Tenerife's favor. Tobey was named tournament MVP after a 21-point, 9-rebound performance on 10-of-13 shooting from the field, with Davin White (14 points, including clutch late free throws) and Richotti (11 points) also key contributors. Guaros' Mario Little led all scorers with 23 points, and Nestor Colmenares added a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds in the loss. Forward Tim Abromaitis captured the workmanlike nature of the win afterward: "I wouldn't say we played our best game, but all that matters is we won and we're lifting the trophy." The victory gave Tenerife its second major trophy of 2017, having already won the inaugural Basketball Champions League title that April, and marked its first Intercontinental Cup crown -- a title the Canary Islands club would go on to win twice more (2020 and February 2023) over the following years, making it the most successful club of the tournament's post-2016 single-elimination era.
