Final context
The 34th edition, held September 12-15, 2024, again at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, pushed the Intercontinental Cup's expansion further still, becoming the first edition in tournament history to feature clubs from all five inhabited continents competing for the world club title. Alongside familiar continental representatives -- Unicaja of Spain (Basketball Champions League champion), NBA G League United (an NBA G League selection standing in for the league), and Quimsa of Argentina (BCL Americas champion) -- the field added three genuine firsts: the Tasmania JackJumpers, Oceania's first-ever participant in the competition; Petro de Luanda of Angola, the first Sub-Saharan African club to qualify, via the Basketball Africa League; and Al Riyadi of Lebanon, the inaugural champion of the newly created Basketball Champions League Asia. Notably, Franca, the defending champion from September 2023, failed to defend its title after being eliminated in the 2023-24 BCL Americas quarterfinals, opening the door for a new champion. Unicaja and NBA G League United both advanced through the group and knockout stages to meet in the September 15 final. Unicaja controlled the game from early on: after G League United's only lead of the game, an early 3-2 edge, the Spanish club pulled steadily away, leading 38-32 at halftime and extending the margin to as much as 22 points (71-49) in the second half en route to a 75-60 win. G League United, which included former NBA G League champion Juan Toscano-Anderson on its roster, shot just 30% from the field against Unicaja's defense. Forward Dylan Osetkowski led Unicaja with 15 points in the final and was named tournament MVP after averaging 11.7 points, 5 rebounds, and 4.3 assists across the event; teammates Tyler Kalinoski (13 points), Yankuba Sima (11 points), and Kameron Taylor (10 points) also contributed in the final, while Jordan Bowden led G League United with 20 points in the loss. The championship was Unicaja's first Intercontinental Cup title in the club's history, and, per FIBA's own recap, it extended Europe's overall count of titles across the competition's full history (including the pre-relaunch 1960s-90s lineage) to 23, with Spanish clubs alone now accounting for 11 of those. It was also a milestone edition for the Americas: NBA G League United's run to the final marked, per that same FIBA recap, the first time a United States-based club had reached an Intercontinental Cup final since 1974, a five-decade gap reflecting how thoroughly the tournament's American representation had shifted toward Brazilian, Argentine, and Venezuelan clubs (and, more recently, G League developmental sides) rather than clubs from the country that invented the sport.
