The most controversial finish in Olympic basketball history: after Doug Collins's free throws gave the USA a 50-49 lead with three seconds left, officials controversially reset the clock and replayed the final three seconds twice before Alexander Belov's layup gave the USSR a 51-50 win, ending the USA's unbeaten Olympic run at seven golds. The US team has never accepted the silver medals, which remain uncollected in a vault in Switzerland.

Tournament context
Munich produced the most controversial finish in the history of Olympic basketball — and arguably in Olympic history overall — ending the United States' unbeaten Olympic run at seven consecutive golds (63 straight games) in circumstances the American team has never accepted as legitimate. With three seconds left and the Soviet Union leading 49-48, American guard Doug Collins stole an inbounds pass and drove to the basket, where he was fouled hard by Zurab Sakandelidze. Collins made both free throws — the second amid apparent chaos at the scorer's table — to put the US ahead 50-49 with three seconds remaining. What followed has been dissected for over fifty years. Soviet coach Vladimir Kondrashin claimed he had called a timeout during Collins's free throws; Brazilian referee Renato Righetto initially ruled no timeout had been granted, consistent with the official scoresheet, and let play resume. But FIBA secretary general William Jones — who held no on-court officiating authority under Olympic rules — intervened from the stands and ordered the final three seconds replayed entirely from the start, resetting the clock. On the second attempt, the horn sounded again with the ball still in play; officials ruled the clock had not been properly set, and ordered a third attempt. This time, the Soviets were allowed an apparently illegal substitution (swapping in Ivan Edeshko without a properly granted timeout), and Edeshko threw a full-court inbounds pass to Alexander Belov, who caught it beneath the American basket — with defender Tom McMillen appearing to back off after a gesture from an official — and scored the winning layup as time expired. The USSR won 51-50. Righetto refused to sign the official scoresheet in protest, later calling the outcome "completely irregular, and outside the rules of the game." The US Olympic Committee filed a formal protest; FIBA's five-member appeals jury, whose composition split along Cold War lines (three judges from Soviet-aligned countries, two from US-aligned countries), voted 3-2 to uphold the result, with the two Western judges reportedly voting for the US and jury chairman Ferenc Hepp — who withheld the vote breakdown publicly at the time — later acknowledging he had voted for the Soviets. The US team voted unanimously to refuse their silver medals, a decision they have upheld ever since; the medals remain uncollected in a vault in Lausanne, Switzerland. In 2012, the surviving players reunited and again voted unanimously to reject the medals, and player Kenny Davis wrote a clause into his will forbidding his descendants from ever accepting his medal posthumously. Congress member and former player Tom McMillen later petitioned the IOC — pointing to the 2002 precedent of awarding duplicate figure-skating golds after a corrupted judging scandal — without success. The game has since been the subject of multiple documentaries, including ESPN's "Silver Reunion" and the Russian film "Going Vertical," and remains, by wide consensus among basketball historians, the most bitterly contested single game in the sport's Olympic history — a controversy that, more than any statistic, defines the tournament's legacy.
