Tournament context

London's Olympic basketball tournament pitted the United States against Spain for the second consecutive Games, with Mike Krzyzewski's American roster — again featuring LeBron James and Kobe Bryant, joined by Kevin Durant, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul and others — seeking to defend the gold it had reclaimed in Beijing four years earlier. The Americans went undefeated through the tournament and reached the final against a Spanish team still built around Pau Gasol and, on this occasion, a resurgent Juan Carlos Navarro. The gold-medal game, played August 12, 2012, proved unexpectedly tight: Spain trailed by only one point entering the fourth quarter, defying expectations that the heavily favored Americans would pull away comfortably as they largely had in 2008. Kevin Durant led all scorers with 30 points, but it was LeBron James — who delivered a decisive dunk and a crucial three-pointer with roughly 2:50 remaining — who provided the separation the US needed to close out a 107-100 win. Kobe Bryant added 17 points in what he announced afterward would be his final Olympic appearance, capping his Olympic career with a second gold medal to go with five NBA championships. For Spain, Pau Gasol scored 24 points and dominated the paint for stretches in the second half, while Juan Carlos Navarro contributed 21. James's individual achievement that year carried broader significance: by winning Olympic gold in 2012 after also capturing the NBA championship, regular-season MVP and Finals MVP awards that same year, he joined Michael Jordan as one of only two players in basketball history to sweep all four of those honors in a single calendar year — a distinction that added considerable weight to an Olympic tournament that, on the American side, functioned as something of a victory-lap capstone to an already historic individual season. Russia won the bronze medal, beating Argentina in the third-place game — a landmark result described by contemporaneous ESPN coverage as the nation's first Olympic basketball medal since the dissolution of the Soviet Union (the USSR having last medaled, and won gold, in 1988), a notable milestone for post-Soviet Russian basketball given the two-decade gap since the country's national program had reconstituted itself separately from the old Soviet system. The 2012 final's competitiveness — Spain's near-upset attempt, in particular — reinforced a pattern that had become increasingly clear across the 2000s and 2010s: even a US roster stacked with the NBA's biggest active stars could no longer expect to simply overwhelm elite international competition the way the original Dream Team had in 1992, with Spain in particular emerging as the most consistent non-American contender of this era, reaching the Olympic final in three of four Games from 2008 through 2016 (excepting 2016 itself, when Spain settled for bronze) opposite the United States.
