October 14, 1978 · Manila / Quezon City, Philippines
Final Round (Gold medal game), 1978 FIBA World Cup: Yugoslavia 82–81 Soviet Union, at Manila / Quezon City, Philippines on October 14, 1978.
The tournament's first genuine single-game knockout final, ending a run of eight editions decided by a round-robin group. Tied 39-39 at halftime and 73-73 at the end of regulation on Anatoly Myshkin's late basket, the game went to overtime, where Soviet center Vladimir Tkachenko fouled out; Yugoslavia used the resulting mismatch to build a cushion, and Dražen Dalipagić's free throw proved the winning point after a late Soviet rally fell just short. Yugoslavia's second World Championship title.
