Franchise history

The Capital Bullets played a single, transitional season in 1973-74 after owner Abe Pollin moved the Baltimore Bullets out of Baltimore to the Washington, D.C. area. With their new arena, the Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland, still under construction, the team opened the season at the University of Maryland's Cole Field House; the Capital Centre itself opened partway through the season, on December 2, 1973. "Capital" served as a regional placeholder name reflecting the club's new home in the nation's capital area, ahead of the more specific "Washington Bullets" name adopted the following year.

On the court the Capital Bullets were a genuine contender: built around Wes Unseld, limited to 56 games by injury, and forward Elvin Hayes, the team went 47-35 and won the Central Division. They were eliminated in a hard-fought seven-game Eastern Conference semifinal loss to the New York Knicks. The franchise adopted the Washington Bullets name for 1974-75.
