Franchise history
The Chicago Bulls were founded on January 16, 1966, as an NBA expansion franchise, the league's first new team since 1961. Owner Dick Klein chose "Bulls" to evoke strength and Chicago's historic ties to the meatpacking and stockyards industry. The expansion Bulls went 33-48 in their debut 1966-67 season — at the time the best first-year record by any major sports expansion team — though no title contention followed for two decades. The franchise's identity was transformed by the 1984 drafting of Michael Jordan, who developed alongside Scottie Pippen and, from 1989, coach Phil Jackson's triangle offense.
After several painful playoff losses to the "Bad Boy" Detroit Pistons in the late 1980s, Chicago broke through to win three consecutive championships from 1991 to 1993. Jordan's brief retirement to pursue baseball interrupted the run, but he returned in 1995 and led a second three-peat from 1996 to 1998, including a then-record 72-win regular season in 1995-96. The Bulls remain the only NBA franchise to win multiple titles without ever losing a Finals series. Jordan's 1998 retirement and the roster breakup sent Chicago into a long rebuilding period it has not fully emerged from.
