Franchise history

The Chicago Zephyrs were the immediate rebrand of the one-season-old Chicago Packers, adopting a new name for 1962-63 to distance the club from the NFL's Green Bay Packers. The results on the court were much the same: Chicago finished 25-55, again last in the Western Division and out of the playoffs. Jack McMahon started the year as coach and was fired at 12-26; Bobby Leonard took over and went 13-29 the rest of the way.

Sophomore center Walt Bellamy remained the team's driving force, routinely scoring 30-plus points a night and anchoring the offense despite the losing record. Thin attendance made the franchise unsustainable in Chicago, and after just this one season as the Zephyrs, ownership relocated the team to Baltimore for 1963-64 under the name Baltimore Bullets.

Sourcing caveat: This site's 'Baltimore Bullets' entry covers the team this Zephyrs franchise became in 1963 and its later history; that 1963-founded Baltimore Bullets is itself a distinct, second use of the name from an earlier, unrelated Baltimore Bullets franchise that played in the BAA/NBA from 1947 to 1954 and folded.
