Franchise history
The Dallas Mavericks entered the NBA as an expansion franchise in 1980, the league's first new team since the 1976 ABA-NBA merger. After early struggles, the franchise's trajectory changed when it acquired German forward Dirk Nowitzki via a 1998 draft-night trade. Nowitzki spent his entire 21-year career in Dallas, winning the 2007 NBA MVP award, though a first-round upset loss to eighth-seeded Golden State that same postseason became a notorious low point.
Owner Mark Cuban invested heavily in the roster, and Dallas reached the 2006 Finals before losing to Miami. Redemption came in 2011, when the Mavericks faced a heavily favored Miami Heat team built around the newly assembled "Heatles" trio of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh. Dallas won the series in six games, with Nowitzki, playing through a torn tendon in his shooting hand, earning Finals MVP honors — the franchise's only championship.
