Franchise history
The Denver Nuggets trace their lineage to 1967, when the franchise began play in the American Basketball Association as the Denver Rockets, one of the ABA's eleven original teams, renamed the Denver Nuggets in 1974. When the ABA folded after the 1975-76 season, Denver was one of four ABA teams absorbed into the NBA as part of the 1976 merger. The Nuggets became competitive quickly, led by high-scoring forward David Thompson, but a championship remained elusive through decades that included the George Karl and Carmelo Anthony eras.
The franchise's fortunes turned with the 2014 draft-day trade acquisition of Serbian center Nikola Jokic, a second-round pick who developed into a generational, pass-first big man, winning back-to-back NBA MVP awards in 2021 and 2022. In 2023, Jokic led Denver, alongside Jamal Murray and coach Michael Malone, to the franchise's first NBA championship, defeating Miami in five games; Jokic was named Finals MVP, completing the Nuggets' nearly six-decade wait for a title dating back to their ABA founding.
