DPDetroit Pistons — 3 nba champions (1988-89, 1989-90, 2003-04).
Franchise history
Owner Fred Zollner relocated the franchise from Fort Wayne, Indiana to Detroit in 1957, keeping the Pistons name — a nod both to the team's origins as the Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons (Zollner's company manufactured pistons) and to Detroit's identity as the heart of the American auto industry. The turnaround began with the 1981 drafting of Isiah Thomas, followed by Bill Laimbeer, Vinnie Johnson, Joe Dumars, coach Chuck Daly, and later Dennis Rodman. Their aggressive, physical style earned the roster the nickname "Bad Boys."
Detroit won its first NBA championship in 1989, sweeping the Lakers, with Joe Dumars named Finals MVP. The Pistons repeated as champions in 1990. After a rebuilding period, Detroit assembled a defense-oriented roster around Chauncey Billups, Ben Wallace, and Rasheed Wallace under coach Larry Brown. The 2003-04 Pistons stunned the heavily favored Lakers in the Finals, winning in five games for the franchise's third NBA championship; Billups earned Finals MVP honors.
