Franchise history

The franchise traces to 1937, when Fred Zollner, owner of a Fort Wayne, Indiana foundry that manufactured pistons for automobile and aircraft engines, sponsored a semi-professional team bearing his company's name. The club turned fully professional in 1941, joining the National Basketball League. Zollner's "Pistons" were an NBL power, winning league championships in 1944 and 1945, then jumped to the rival BAA in 1948 and became a charter NBA franchise when the BAA and NBL merged in 1949.

The Fort Wayne Pistons reached their competitive peak in the mid-1950s under coach Charley Eckman, built around George Yardley and Larry Foust. The team reached back-to-back NBA Finals in 1955 (lost to Syracuse in seven games) and 1956 (lost to Philadelphia in five). Facing the limitations of a small media market, Zollner relocated the team to Detroit for the 1957-58 season, retaining the "Pistons" name.
