Franchise history

The Golden State Warriors are the third and current incarnation of a franchise that has called the Bay Area home since 1962, adopting the "Golden State" name in 1971 to reflect a fanbase spanning the entire state. Behind Rick Barry and coach Al Attles, the Warriors won the 1975 NBA championship, sweeping the heavily favored Washington Bullets in one of the biggest upsets in league history. That title proved to be an aberration rather than a foundation — for nearly four decades the Warriors were mostly an also-ran amid frequent ownership and front-office turmoil.

The franchise's fortunes changed permanently after drafting Stephen Curry in 2009 and hiring Steve Kerr as head coach in 2014. Paired with Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, and eventually Kevin Durant, Curry and Kerr built a dynasty rooted in three-point shooting and ball movement, winning NBA championships in 2015, 2017, and 2018, and adding a fourth in 2022. The Warriors also set the NBA's all-time regular-season wins record (73-9) in 2015-16 but lost that year's Finals to Cleveland. The team moved from Oakland to the new Chase Center in San Francisco in 2019.
