Franchise history

The Pacers were founded in 1967 as a charter member of the American Basketball Association, quickly becoming the league's flagship franchise. Under head coach Bobby "Slick" Leonard and led by Roger Brown, Mel Daniels, and George McGinnis, Indiana won three ABA championships (1970, 1972, and 1973) and reached the ABA Finals a total of five times, more than any other franchise in the league's nine-year history. The 1976 NBA-ABA merger absorbed the Pacers, but the transition proved financially brutal, leading to lean competitive seasons through the late 1970s and 1980s.

The franchise's fortunes changed with the 1987 draft selection of sharpshooting guard Reggie Miller, whose 18-year career defined the Pacers' NBA identity, highlighted by dramatic playoff performances against the rival New York Knicks in the 1990s. Indiana reached its first NBA Finals in 1999-2000, going 56-26 before losing in six games to the Lakers, led by Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant. Miller retired in 2005 as the franchise's career scoring leader.
