Franchise history

The Indianapolis Jets traced back to the Indianapolis Kautskys, a semipro club founded in 1931 by grocer Frank Kautsky that became a charter National Basketball League member in 1937 and, led by Arnie Risen, won the World Professional Basketball Tournament in 1946-47. The franchise moved to the rival Basketball Association of America for the 1948-49 season as the renamed Jets, going 18-42 to finish sixth in the BAA's Western Division. Unlike Anderson, Sheboygan, and Waterloo, the Jets never actually reached the merged NBA: ownership folded the franchise on August 3, 1949, days before the BAA and NBL combined to form the NBA, and Indianapolis's slot in the new league went instead to an entirely separate expansion team, the Indianapolis Olympians, for 1949-50. There is no continuing NBA lineage from the Jets.

Sourcing caveat: The Jets' single season was in the BAA (1948-49), not the merged NBA of 1949-50; they folded before the merger took effect and were succeeded in Indianapolis by the unrelated expansion Olympians.
