Franchise history

When the Cincinnati Royals relocated in March 1972, the team did not settle on a single new home: it split its schedule between the 7,316-seat Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Missouri and the 9,300-seat Omaha Civic Auditorium in Omaha, Nebraska, playing under the awkward dual-city name Kansas City-Omaha Kings. The franchise had scouted Omaha as a potential market as far back as 1968, and the arrangement let it test both cities before committing.

On the court, young guard Nate Archibald became the franchise's new star, leading the NBA in both scoring and assists in the team's first Kansas City-Omaha season, 1972-73 — a feat no player has repeated since. Center Sam Lacey anchored the roster as a reliable passer and defender through the transition. The dual-city experiment ended in 1975, when the team moved into the new Kemper Arena and dropped "Omaha" from its name, though it continued playing a handful of games in Omaha each season through 1978.
