Franchise history

The Oklahoma City Thunder began play in 2008 after owner Clay Bennett relocated the Seattle SuperSonics, retaining the franchise's history and statistics but adopting a new name and identity. The Thunder inherited a young core built through high draft picks, most notably Kevin Durant (2007) and Russell Westbrook (2008), powering a rapid rise to a 2012 Finals appearance in just the franchise's fourth season, lost to Miami. Durant's 2016 departure to Golden State reshaped the franchise, and Westbrook carried the team — winning MVP in 2017 — until he was traded in 2019.

General manager Sam Presti's deliberate rebuild, built on accumulated draft capital, produced Shai Gilgeous-Alexander as a franchise cornerstone. The young, deep Thunder surged to the top of the West, winning 68 games in 2024-25, with Gilgeous-Alexander earning league MVP. Oklahoma City then defeated the Indiana Pacers in a seven-game 2025 Finals to capture the franchise's first championship since relocating.
