Franchise history
The Orlando Magic were awarded an NBA expansion franchise in 1989, one of four teams added to the league that year. The franchise's fortunes transformed in 1992 when Orlando won the draft lottery and selected dominant center Shaquille O'Neal, who immediately won Rookie of the Year. The following year, after winning a second consecutive lottery and drafting Chris Webber, the Magic traded Webber to Golden State for guard Anfernee "Penny" Hardaway — pairing O'Neal's inside dominance with Hardaway's all-around playmaking.
In just its sixth year of existence, the 1994-95 Magic went 57-25, the best record in the Eastern Conference, and advanced to the NBA Finals — one of the fastest expansion franchises to reach a championship series. Orlando was swept 4-0 by Hakeem Olajuwon's Houston Rockets, whose veteran playoff experience proved decisive. O'Neal left as a free agent for the Lakers in 1996, but the brief Shaq-Penny era remains the defining chapter of the Magic's early history.
