Franchise history

The Phoenix Suns entered the NBA as an expansion franchise in January 1968 alongside the Milwaukee Bucks. Despite consistent competitiveness, the Suns have never won an NBA championship, reaching the Finals three times across five decades. Their first appearance came in 1976, remembered for Game 5's triple-overtime classic, in which Phoenix erased a 22-point deficit; Boston nonetheless closed out the title in six games. The Suns returned to the Finals in 1993 behind MVP Charles Barkley, again losing in six games to Michael Jordan's Bulls.

Nearly three decades later, a retooled Suns roster built around veteran point guard Chris Paul and All-Star Devin Booker made a surprise run to the 2021 Finals. The Suns won the first two games against Giannis Antetokounmpo's Milwaukee Bucks but lost the next four, falling 4-2, even as Booker set records for postseason scoring by a Finals debutant. The Suns remain one of the winningest teams to never claim a title.
