Franchise history
The San Antonio Spurs' roots trace to the Dallas Chaparrals, a charter member of the American Basketball Association (ABA) in its inaugural 1967-68 season. Facing weak attendance in Dallas, the franchise relocated to San Antonio in 1973 and was rebranded the Spurs. San Antonio became one of four ABA franchises absorbed into the NBA when the leagues merged in 1976.
The Spurs became consistent winners in the late 1980s after drafting center David Robinson first overall in 1987. The franchise's dynastic era began after a 1996-97 season in which the team fell to 20-62 with Robinson injured, netting them the No. 1 pick in the 1997 draft and forward Tim Duncan. That same season, Gregg Popovich took over as head coach, a role he would hold for more than two decades. Duncan, Robinson, Popovich, and later stars Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili built a model franchise: San Antonio won NBA championships in 1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2014, going 5-0 in Finals appearances — a perfect record unmatched by any other multi-title franchise.
