Franchise history

The San Francisco Warriors were born when new ownership purchased the Philadelphia Warriors in 1962 and relocated the franchise to the West Coast, making it the first NBA team based in California. Wilt Chamberlain anchored the club in its early San Francisco years before being traded back to Philadelphia in January 1965, a deal that stunned the league. That rebuild centered on forward Rick Barry, the 1965-66 Rookie of the Year.

Under coach Bill Sharman, the Warriors surged to the 1967 NBA Finals, where Barry averaged 40.8 points per game in the series — still a Finals scoring record — but San Francisco fell to Chamberlain's Philadelphia 76ers, 4 games to 2, in a series that ended an 11-year run of Boston Celtics championships. It was San Francisco's only Finals appearance. Barry left for the rival ABA in 1967 amid a contract dispute, and financial and attendance pressures led the franchise to rebrand as the Golden State Warriors starting with the 1971-72 season.
