Franchise history
The Toronto Raptors joined the NBA as an expansion franchise for the 1995-96 season, part of a brief experiment in Canadian expansion that simultaneously brought the Vancouver Grizzlies into the league (which relocated to Memphis in 2001). Toronto's franchise put down roots, aided by the electrifying arrival of Vince Carter via a 1998 draft-night trade — his high-flying dunks and 2000 Slam Dunk Contest performance made him a global ambassador before an acrimonious 2004 trade request and departure.
The franchise spent much of the 2000s and early 2010s in playoff mediocrity before president Masai Ujiri built a sustained contender behind DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry. The landmark moment came after a bold 2018 trade for Kawhi Leonard, who led Toronto to a 2019 Finals victory over the two-time-defending-champion Golden State Warriors, winning Finals MVP — making the Raptors the first, and to date only, NBA team based outside the United States to win a title. Leonard left for the Clippers that summer.
