Overview

Tendulkar made his international debut for India at just 16 years old, against Pakistan in November 1989, and went on to play international cricket for nearly 24 years without ever losing his place through injury or loss of form for long. He is the only cricketer in history to score 100 international centuries, a milestone widely regarded as effectively unrepeatable given how the game and its schedules have since changed, and remains the leading run-scorer of all time in both Test and ODI cricket. Revered in India as "the Little Master" and later "the God of Cricket," his 2013 retirement Test at his home ground in Mumbai was treated as a national event, with the pitch itself later ceremonially preserved. He was also part of India's failed 2003 World Cup final side before finally winning the trophy on home soil in 2011, a result widely described in the Indian press as "carrying Tendulkar on their shoulders" after two decades of him carrying the team.
