Australia and England contested the first-ever Test match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in March 1877, with the hosts winning by 45 runs behind Charles Bannerman's century -- the first in Test history. From that fixture grew The Ashes, cricket's oldest and most storied rivalry, born from a mock obituary published by The Sporting Times after England's shock 1882 defeat at The Oval mourned the "death of English cricket" and declared the ashes would be taken to Australia. The team's own identity became inseparable from the "Baggy Green," the dark green cap presented to every debutant and treated as the sport's most revered piece of headwear.

No figure shaped Australian cricket like Donald Bradman, whose batting from 1928 to 1948 produced a Test average of 99.94, still statistically unmatched in the sport. His 1948 touring side to England, unbeaten across the tour, became immortalised as "The Invincibles." Decades later, under Mark Taylor and then Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting, Australia built arguably the most dominant Test and one-day side in the game's history, winning three consecutive 50-over World Cups (1999, 2003, 2007) and holding the number-one Test ranking for years through players like Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath and Adam Gilchrist.

Australia has won the ODI World Cup a record six times (1987, 1999, 2003, 2007, 2015, 2023), more than any other nation, and captured the inaugural World Test Championship in 2023. The Ashes remains the emotional centrepiece of the calendar, while contests with India have intensified into the modern era's leading Test rivalry.
