INIndia — 2 icc men's cricket world cup winners (1983, 2011).

Country history

India entered Test cricket on 25 June 1932 at Lord's under captain C. K. Nayudu, losing to England but announcing the arrival of a cricketing giant. Full Test status had been confirmed as India, alongside New Zealand, joined the fold that decade, though results remained modest for the following half-century. The team is universally known as the "Men in Blue," reflecting the royal-blue limited-overs kit adopted from the 1980s onward that became the visual identity of Indian cricket worldwide.

The watershed moment came in 1983, when Kapil Dev's unfancied India stunned two-time defending champions West Indies in the World Cup final at Lord's, a victory credited with transforming cricket's popularity and commercial scale on the subcontinent. Under Sourav Ganguly from 2000, India developed a more assertive, competitive Test and one-day culture, a foundation that yielded the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007 under MS Dhoni, the 2011 ODI World Cup on home soil, and the 2013 Champions Trophy, making Dhoni the only captain to win all three global limited-overs titles.

India's rise coincided with the Indian Premier League reshaping the sport's economics from 2008, entrenching India as cricket's financial and administrative power centre. Under Virat Kohli and later Rohit Sharma, India reached the 2019 and 2023 ODI World Cup finals (losing to Australia in 2023) and multiple T20 World Cup finals, finally adding the 2024 T20 World Cup, won undefeated over South Africa, and the 2025 Champions Trophy. Rivalries with Pakistan and, increasingly, Australia now define the sport's biggest occasions.
