WIWest Indies — 2 icc men's cricket world cup winners (1975, 1979).
Country history
The West Indies is unique among international sporting teams: rather than representing a single nation, it fields a composite side drawn from more than a dozen Caribbean countries and territories, including independent nations such as Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, and Guyana, alongside British overseas territories like Antigua and Montserrat, all administered through regional cricket associations under Cricket West Indies. The team played its first Test in June 1928 against England at Lord's, becoming the fourth country to attain Test status, and its cricket became one of the most powerful unifying cultural symbols across a politically fragmented region.
West Indies cricket reached its zenith from the mid-1970s to early 1990s under Clive Lloyd and later Viv Richards, an era built on a ferocious four-pronged pace attack (including bowlers such as Michael Holding, Malcolm Marshall, Joel Garner and Andy Roberts) and devastating batting. The side went undefeated in Test series for around 15 years, set a then-record streak of 11 consecutive Test wins in 1984, and won the first two Cricket World Cups, in 1975 and 1979, becoming the first team to win the tournament back-to-back; they also reached the 1983 final before losing to India.
Decline followed from the mid-1990s amid administrative disputes, player pay conflicts and the pull of other sports across the Caribbean, and West Indies fell from the world's best Test side to a middling and often struggling one. Twenty20 cricket brought a striking late revival: West Indies won the 2004 ICC Champions Trophy and, driven by explosive power-hitters like Chris Gayle, became the only team to win the T20 World Cup twice, in 2012 and 2016, the latter capped by Carlos Brathwaite's famous four sixes in the final over against England.
