Group stage (Group B) — 1983 Cricket World Cup

June 18, 1983 · Nevill Ground, Tunbridge Wells

Result: INIndia — India won by 31 runs. INIndia 266/8 (60 overs), ZIZimbabwe 235 all out (57 overs). June 18, 1983 · Nevill Ground, Tunbridge Wells.

One of the most famous individual innings in ODI/World Cup history: India collapsed to 17/5 (Gavaskar, Srikkanth, Amarnath, Patil and Yashpal Sharma all out cheaply) before Kapil Dev's unbeaten 175 off 138 balls, including a then-ODI-record 126-run 9th-wicket stand with Kirmani (24*), rescued the innings to 266/8. The match was not televised by the BBC, so no video record survives; ball-by-ball shot detail beyond the scorecard numbers above is genuinely unrecoverable and has not been invented. Widely credited, alongside the semi-final win over England and the final upset of West Indies, as a turning point of India's tournament.
