Semi-final 2 — 1987 Cricket World Cup
November 5, 1987 · Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai
Result: ENEngland — England won by 35 runs. ENEngland 254/6 (50 overs), INIndia 219 all out (45.3 overs). November 5, 1987 · Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
One of the great World Cup upsets — England beat the defending champions on their home soil in front of a partisan Mumbai crowd. India reached 204/5 in a strong position before losing their last 5 wickets for just 15 runs. Gooch's century was built around a sweep shot he had specifically practised against India's spinners (Ravi Shastri and Maninder Singh); the result also denied the anticipated India-Pakistan final, since Pakistan had lost their own semi-final the previous day.
