Semi-final 2 — 1992 Cricket World Cup

March 22, 1992 · Sydney Cricket Ground

Result: ENEngland — England won by 19 runs. ENEngland 252/6 (45 overs), SASouth Africa 232/6 (43 overs, chasing a revised target). March 22, 1992 · Sydney Cricket Ground.

One of the most notorious incidents in Cricket World Cup history. England's innings itself was reduced from 50 to 45 overs by an earlier rain delay. South Africa's chase was going well when rain stopped play with South Africa needing 22 runs off 13 balls; after a stoppage of only around 12 minutes, the tournament's flawed "Most Productive Overs" rain rule recalculated the target — the scoreboard first showed 22 off 7 balls, was corrected to 21 off 7, and then, after officials realised a second over also had to be deducted, the target became 21 runs off just 1 ball, an effectively impossible target the players were not told about until they returned to the field. South Africa's innings ended there. This farcical sequence is widely credited as the single incident that discredited the Most Productive Overs method and directly drove cricket's later adoption of the Duckworth-Lewis method.
