Semi-final 1 — 1996 Cricket World Cup
March 13, 1996 · Eden Gardens, Kolkata
Result: SLSri Lanka — Match abandoned, awarded to Sri Lanka by default. SLSri Lanka 251/8 (50 overs), INIndia 120/8 (34.1 overs). March 13, 1996 · Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
One of the most notorious matches in Cricket World Cup history. After Tendulkar's dismissal India collapsed from 98/1 to 120/8, triggered by Jayasuriya's off-spin; sections of the capacity crowd began throwing bottles and fruit onto the field and lit fires in the stands. Police could not control the disturbance, and match referee Clive Lloyd abandoned the match, awarding it to Sri Lanka by default — an unprecedented ruling in international cricket at the time.
