Match report
Two days after the tournament's openers, Australia and Great Britain — the two heavyweights of the competition — met at the SCG in front of a huge crowd approaching 58,000. Australia, captained and coached by Dick Poole, made several changes from their opening win, most notably shifting Brian Carlson from the wing to fullback. Great Britain, missing centre Phil Jackson and back-rower Geoff Gunney from their round-one side, drafted in Eric Ashton at centre and John Whiteley in the second row. Australia took control from early on, leading 10-6 at the break, and pulled away decisively in the second half, particularly out wide where wingers Ian Moir and halfback Ken McCaffery ran in two tries apiece. Fullback Brian Carlson was prolific with the boot, landing four goals, while further tries were credited to Brian Clay, Kel O'Shea and Harry Wells, giving Australia a heavy 31-6 win. Great Britain's only points came from the boot of Lewis Jones, who kicked three goals but could not engineer a try for his side against a dominant Australian defence. The result was the platform for Australia's unbeaten run through the tournament, which they completed with a perfect 3-0 record to be declared 1957 World Cup champions without the need for a separate final — a landmark result as the first time Australia had won the trophy on home soil, and this Sydney thrashing of the Lions was the tournament's marquee, highest-attended fixture and its defining statement of Australian superiority that year.
Sourcing caveat: Australia's individually named try scorers (Moir 2, McCaffery 2, Clay, O'Shea, Wells — 7 tries) combined with Carlson's 4 goals total 29 points, two short of the confirmed 31-point final score; one source pass suggested a possible additional goal by forward Brian Davies, but this could not be corroborated consistently and is not asserted as fact.
