Match report
This match doubled as the third and deciding Test of New Zealand's 1985 home series against Australia, and the opening fixture of the newly launched 1985-88 World Cup. Australia had already won the series 2-0 and arrived as hot favourites with a star-studded touring squad including Wally Lewis, Mal Meninga and Garry Jack, but New Zealand, under coach Graham Lowe, produced one of the most famous shocks in trans-Tasman history, shutting the Kangaroos out 18-0 -- Australia's first scoreless defeat since 1956-57. Two days before the match, Lowe had the squad walk down Auckland's Queen Street, where they received unexpectedly strong public support, a moment widely credited with lifting morale after the series had already been lost.
New Zealand's forward pack, led by captain Mark Graham and Kurt Sorensen, dominated physically, while halfback Clayton Friend scored twice and five-eighth Olsen Filipaina controlled the match with his kicking game and goal-kicking. New Zealand led 8-0 at halftime and shut Australia out completely after the break. The match is also remembered for prop Kevin Tamati's spontaneous post-match haka. Independent retrospective sources (Canberra Times, 1News) describe New Zealand scoring three tries in total, though only Friend's two are individually named in the primary scoresheet -- the third try scorer is not identified in sources found.
Sourcing caveat: The scorer breakdown as recorded on rugbyleagueproject.org (Friend 2 tries, Filipaina 3/4 goals = 14 points) does not fully reconcile with the 18-0 final score. Independent retrospective sources state New Zealand scored three tries in total; the identity of the third try scorer could not be confirmed despite cross-checking multiple sources.
