Match report
Papua New Guinea were on an extensive New Zealand tour, having already beaten Midlands 58-0 and Waikato 38-12 en route to Auckland. Facing a full-strength New Zealand side captained by Dean Bell, PNG were comprehensively outclassed. The Kiwis ran in a dozen tries, with Shane Horo and Kevin Iro each scoring hat-tricks and hooker Gary Mercer adding a double. Prop Peter Brown was reliable off the tee, converting 9 of his 12 attempts.
PNG's response came via tries to fullback Dairi Kovae and hooker Michael Matmillo, with captain Bal Numapo landing three goals. For New Zealand, the emphatic win set up a must-win showdown against Great Britain a week later, with the winner advancing toward the World Cup final. PNG ultimately finished bottom of the group table in their maiden World Cup campaign.
