Match report

A tense, low-scoring arm-wrestle at a then-record 73,631-strong Wembley: Deryck Fox and Mal Meninga traded penalty goals to leave Great Britain 6-4 up at half-time, and the hosts still led with about 12 minutes to go. Both sides had walking wounded — Joe Lydon and Gary Connolly went off for Great Britain, while Australia lost Paul Sironen to a back injury and test-debutant Brad Fittler needed treatment after a first-half elbow left him with a hairline cheekbone fracture.

The match was decided when replacement Kevin Walters put fellow Bronco Steve Renouf — also on Test debut — through a gap for a 20-metre try in the corner; Meninga's touchline conversion made it 10-6, and that scoreline held to the final whistle. Heavy rain rolled in over Wembley immediately after full-time. Steve Walters was named player of the match; it was Australia's seventh World Cup title.
