Group stage (Group A) — 1975 Cricket World Cup
June 7, 1975 · Lord's, London
Result: ENEngland — England won by 202 runs. ENEngland 334/4 (60 overs), INIndia 132/3 (60 overs). June 7, 1975 · Lord's, London.
The inaugural tournament's most notorious individual innings: Amiss's 137 was the first century in Cricket World Cup history and set what was then the highest ODI total (334/4), but the match is remembered above all for Sunil Gavaskar batting through all 60 overs for India without ever attempting to chase, finishing 36 not out off 174 balls -- a strike rate of roughly 20 -- while never being dismissed. Gavaskar faced heavy criticism afterward and later said he had gotten into a mental rut; teammate Viswanath scored more runs (37) off far fewer balls in the same innings. Widely-cited dot-ball counts for Gavaskar's innings (commonly given as around 138) are illustrative rather than an official statistic and are not treated as precise here.
