Semi-final 2 — 1999 Cricket World Cup

June 17, 1999 · Edgbaston, Birmingham

Result: Match tied. AUAustralia 213 all out (49.2 overs), SASouth Africa 213 all out (49.4 overs). June 17, 1999 · Edgbaston, Birmingham.

One of the most famous matches in Cricket World Cup history. South Africa needed 9 off the final over (Damien Fleming bowling) with last pair Lance Klusener and Allan Donald at the crease; Klusener struck the first two balls for four each to level the scores, then on the fourth ball drove to Mark Waugh at mid-off and set off for the winning run — Donald, slow away from the non-striker's end, was run out via Waugh-Fleming-Gilchrist, leaving the match tied. Australia advanced to the final ahead of South Africa on their higher finish in the Super Six standings (itself decided by their earlier head-to-head Super Six win over South Africa, see match 39).
