Club history
Arsenal Football Club traces its roots to October 1886, when munitions worker David Danskin and fifteen colleagues at the Royal Arsenal armaments factory in Woolwich, southeast London, pooled sixpence each to form a team originally called Dial Square. Renamed Royal Arsenal and later Woolwich Arsenal, the club turned professional in 1891, the first in the south of England to do so, and its military heritage gave rise to the enduring nickname "The Gunners." A 1913 move across the Thames to Highbury in north London established Arsenal's modern identity; the club's famous red shirts with white sleeves were introduced by legendary manager Herbert Chapman in 1933.
Chapman, appointed in 1925, transformed Arsenal into England's dominant force, pioneering the WM formation and winning the FA Cup in 1930 and league titles in 1931 and 1933 before his sudden death in 1934; the club added further championships through the decade under Joe Shaw and George Allison, becoming the most successful English side of the era. Postwar titles followed in 1948 and 1953, then an 18-year trophy drought was broken when Bertie Mee's side completed the league and FA Cup Double in 1971. George Graham's disciplined side of the late 1980s and early 1990s, built around a famous back four, won two league titles and a Cup Winners' Cup.
Arsene Wenger's 22-year tenure from 1996 brought further Doubles, a record run of Champions League qualification, and the 2003-04 "Invincibles," who went the entire league season unbeaten. Arsenal moved to the 60,000-capacity Emirates Stadium in 2006. Arsenal has never been relegated from the English top flight, one of only two clubs (with Everton) never to have left it.
