CHChelsea — 6 english top-flight champions (1954-55, 2004-05, 2005-06, 2009-10, 2014-15, 2016-17).
Club history
Chelsea Football Club was founded in 1905 by businessman Gus Mears specifically to occupy Stamford Bridge, the stadium he had acquired and redeveloped -- as the saying goes, most clubs find a ground, but Chelsea was formed for one, after neighbouring Fulham declined to lease it. Named after the surrounding area rather than the pitch's actual borough, the club adopted an image of a Chelsea Pensioner, a veteran of the nearby Royal Hospital, on its early crest, giving rise to the old nickname 'the Pensioners' before 'the Blues' became standard.
Success was slow to arrive: Chelsea's first League Championship came only in 1955 under Ted Drake, followed by an FA Cup win in 1970 and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1971, both featuring dramatic replays against Leeds and Real Madrid respectively. Financial peril in the early 1980s was averted when Ken Bates bought the club for a nominal 1 pound in 1982, steadying it through years of rebuilding at Stamford Bridge.
Everything changed in 2003, when Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich's takeover ushered in unprecedented investment. Under managers including Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti and Thomas Tuchel, Chelsea won five Premier League titles, five FA Cups and two Champions League crowns (2012 and 2021), alongside Europa League and Club World Cup successes. Abramovich's 2022 sanctioning over the Russia-Ukraine war forced a swift, government-approved sale to a Todd Boehly-Clearlake Capital consortium for roughly 4.25 billion pounds, opening a new, heavy-spending chapter under different ownership.
