Club history
Huddersfield Town Association Football Club was founded on 15 August 1908, when local backers bought a site on Leeds Road for 500 pounds and entered the North Eastern League as the town sought a senior side to rival the area's dominant rugby league clubs. The 'Terriers' nickname, referencing the Yorkshire Terrier breed associated with the county, was formally adopted in 1969, though the club had long been linked with the animal.
Huddersfield's defining era came under manager Herbert Chapman in the 1920s: the club won the FA Cup in 1922, then became the first English side to win three successive League Championships, in 1923-24, 1924-25 and 1925-26 -- a feat Chapman began before departing for Arsenal, where he repeated the trick. That run made Huddersfield, briefly, the most successful club in English football history, though sustained success proved impossible to replicate, and the team drifted down the divisions across the following decades.
Leeds Road, the club's home from 1908, was replaced in 1994 by the new all-seater Kirklees Stadium (later the Galpharm and John Smith's Stadium), built to modern safety standards after the Taylor Report. Huddersfield returned to the top flight in 2017 for the first time since 1972, winning a dramatic Championship play-off final on penalties against Reading, but were relegated after finishing bottom in 2018-19. Long-time owner Dean Hoyle wrote off around 40 million pounds in debt to stave off administration before selling to American investor Kevin Nagle in 2023, amid continued instability in the Championship and League One.
