Club history
Ipswich Town Football Club traces its origins to 1878, when Ipswich Association Football Club was formed by former pupils of Ipswich School; in 1888 it merged with the town's rugby club to create the modern institution, which turned professional in 1936 and was elected to the Football League in 1938. The club's home has been Portman Road since 1884, one of English football's oldest continuously used grounds, later becoming the first fully all-seater stadium in the top flight after 1992 renovations.
Ipswich's finest era began under Alf Ramsey, who led the newly promoted club to the First Division title in 1961-62. Bobby Robson's 13-year tenure (1969-1982) produced the club's greatest sustained success: the 1978 FA Cup, beating Arsenal at Wembley, and the 1981 UEFA Cup, secured on a 5-3 aggregate win over AZ Alkmaar, alongside a runners-up league finish that same season. Ipswich's nickname, "the Tractor Boys," is comparatively recent, coined mockingly by Leeds United fans during a September 2000 Premier League fixture in reference to Suffolk's agricultural character, and later embraced with self-deprecating pride by Ipswich supporters.
After Robson's departure the club declined steadily, oscillating between divisions and coming close to administration in the early 2000s under mounting debts. A long 22-year absence from the top flight followed relegation in 2002, spent largely under owner Marcus Evans (from 2007) before a sale to Gamechanger 20 Limited in 2021. Manager Kieran McKenna guided Ipswich to consecutive promotions in 2023 and 2024, restoring Premier League status before an immediate relegation in 2024-25. Norwich City remains Ipswich's fiercest rival in the long-running East Anglian derby.
