Club history

Liverpool Football Club was founded on 3 June 1892 by John Houlding, the businessman and Everton chairman who owned the Anfield ground. When a rent dispute caused Everton to relocate to Goodison Park, Houlding formed a new club to occupy the vacant stadium; an initial application to call it Everton Athletic was rejected by the Football Association, and the club adopted the name Liverpool instead. Anfield has remained its home ever since, its Kop terrace (built 1906) becoming one of football's most famous stands. The club's red identity dates to 1896, but the all-red kit now synonymous with "the Reds" was introduced by manager Bill Shankly in 1964, who believed it projected power and aggression.

Shankly's rebuilding from the late 1950s launched Liverpool's transformation into England's most decorated club, a dominance sustained by successors Bob Paisley, Joe Fagan and Kenny Dalglish through the 1970s and 1980s, yielding league titles, League Cups, and four European Cups. That era was scarred by tragedy: the 1985 Heysel Stadium disaster, in which 39 Juventus fans died before the European Cup final, led to a five-year ban on English clubs in Europe, while the 1989 Hillsborough disaster killed 97 Liverpool supporters and reshaped stadium safety nationwide. A trophy drought through the 1990s and 2000s was punctuated by a dramatic Champions League win in Istanbul in 2005 under Rafael Benitez. Financial strain under American owners Gillett and Hicks (2007) nearly forced administration before Fenway Sports Group's 2010 takeover stabilised the club.

Under Jurgen Klopp (2015-2024), Liverpool won the Champions League in 2019 and a first league title in 30 years in 2019-20, with Arne Slot adding a 20th league championship in 2024-25. The Merseyside derby against Everton and the historic rivalry with Manchester United remain the club's defining fixtures.
