Club history
Manchester City's origins lie in 1880, when St Mark's (West Gorton), a church cricket and football club, was founded partly through the efforts of Anna Connell, daughter of the local rector, to give young working men a wholesome pastime. The club was reconstituted as Ardwick Association Football Club in 1887 and renamed Manchester City in 1894, the same year it adopted the sky-blue shirts that gave rise to its enduring nickname, "the Sky Blues," alongside "the Citizens." City played at Hyde Road from 1887 until a fire destroyed the main stand in 1920, prompting a move to Maine Road in 1923. In 2003 the club relocated again, to the City of Manchester Stadium (renamed the Etihad Stadium in 2011), built originally for the 2002 Commonwealth Games.
City won its first major trophy, the FA Cup, in 1904, and its first league title in 1936-37, but spent much of the mid-twentieth century oscillating between divisions. A celebrated side under Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison won the league in 1967-68, the FA Cup in 1969, and the League Cup and European Cup Winners' Cup in 1970. Decline followed, culminating in relegation to the third tier in 1998, the club's historic nadir, and a period of financial instability that included a brief, troubled ownership under Thaksin Shinawatra.
Everything changed in August 2008, when Sheikh Mansour's Abu Dhabi United Group acquired the club, funding a transformation that brought the FA Cup in 2011 and a first league title in 44 years in 2011-12, sealed by Sergio Aguero's injury-time goal against QPR. Under Pep Guardiola (2016-2026), City became England's dominant force, winning a domestic treble in 2018-19 and a continental treble (Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup) in 2022-23, though the club's finances have drawn scrutiny amid an ongoing Premier League investigation into alleged financial rule breaches. Manchester United remains City's fiercest rival in the Manchester derby.
