NUNewcastle United

Club history

Newcastle United was formally constituted on 9 December 1892 through the merger of Newcastle East End and Newcastle West End, with East End absorbing West End's ground, St James' Park, which has remained the club's home ever since. The black-and-white striped shirt was adopted because the colour was associated with neither predecessor club, and the 'Magpies' nickname followed naturally from the striking resemblance to the bird's plumage. Fans are collectively known as the 'Toon Army', 'Toon' being Geordie dialect for 'town'.

Newcastle's first golden age came in the Edwardian era, winning three League Championships between 1904/05 and 1908/09 and the FA Cup in 1910, fielding sides contemporaries rated among the finest of the age. A second purple patch followed after the Second World War, with three FA Cups in five years (1951, 1952, 1955). Decades of underachievement and yo-yoing between divisions followed, briefly interrupted by Kevin Keegan's thrilling 'Entertainers' side of the mid-1990s, which challenged for the Premier League title without winning it.

Mike Ashley's 2007-2021 ownership was marked by fan protests, relegations, and chronic underinvestment. In October 2021 a Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund-led consortium bought the club, triggering 'sportswashing' criticism but also a return to European football, with Newcastle winning the EFL Cup in 2025, ending a 70-year major trophy drought.
