Club history

Nottingham Forest was founded in 1865 by a group of shinty players meeting at the Clinton Arms in Nottingham who decided to adopt association football. They purchased tasselled caps dyed 'Garibaldi red' in tribute to the Italian revolutionary Giuseppe Garibaldi, giving the club its enduring red kit and the nicknames 'the Reds' and 'the Garibaldi'; the modern nickname 'Tricky Trees' derives from the club's original base on Nottingham's Forest Recreation Ground. The club moved to the City Ground, on the banks of the River Trent in West Bridgford, in 1898, a stadium famously located barely 300 yards from rivals Notts County's Meadow Lane.

Early success included the 1898 FA Cup, but Forest's defining era came under manager Brian Clough and assistant Peter Taylor from 1975. Clough took Forest from the Second Division to the League Championship in 1978 and then, remarkably, to consecutive European Cup triumphs in 1979 and 1980, becoming one of only a handful of English clubs to win it back-to-back.

After Clough's 1993 retirement, Forest slid into decline, suffering repeated relegations and financial turmoil, dropping as low as the third tier by 2005. Greek shipping magnate Evangelos Marinakis took ownership in 2017, and Forest returned to the Premier League via the 2022 play-offs after a 23-year top-flight absence.
