Club history
Oldham Athletic's roots trace to 1895, when a club named Pine Villa was formed in the Hathershaw and Coppice areas of Oldham. In 1899, when local rivals Oldham County folded, Pine Villa took over their Boundary Park ground and reconstituted as Oldham Athletic. The 'Latics' nickname is simply a colloquial shortening of 'Athletic'. Boundary Park has remained the club's home ever since, one of the longest continuous tenancies in English football.
Oldham's closest brush with the title came in 1914-15, when they finished First Division runners-up, a single point behind champions Everton -- still the club's highest-ever league finish. Decades of lower-division football followed until the Joe Royle era of the late 1980s and early 1990s brought a revival: an FA Cup semi-final and League Cup final appearance in 1990, and promotion to the old First Division in 1991. Oldham were founding members of the Premier League in 1992 but were relegated after just two seasons in 1994, beginning a long decline through the divisions accompanied by recurring financial crises and boardroom instability.
The nadir came in 2022, when Oldham became the first former Premier League club to fall out of the Football League into the National League. After three seasons in non-league football, the club won promotion back to League Two via the 2025 National League play-off final.
