Club history

Queens Park Rangers trace their formation to 1882, when Christchurch Rangers merged with St Jude's Institute, taking their name from the Queen's Park area of west London where many of the founding players lived. Renowned for a nomadic early existence, the club played at nearly twenty different grounds across west London before settling permanently at Loftus Road, Shepherd's Bush, in 1917.

Known as the Hoops or Super Hoops for their blue-and-white hooped shirts, and to fans simply as the Rs, QPR's greatest achievement came in 1966-67, when, playing in the Third Division, they beat West Bromwich Albion 3-2 in the League Cup final at Wembley after trailing 2-0 -- still their only major domestic trophy. The club enjoyed its finest league campaign in 1975-76 under Dave Sexton, finishing First Division runners-up to Liverpool by a single point with an attacking side built around Stan Bowles and Gerry Francis. QPR pioneered an artificial pitch at Loftus Road in the early 1980s and reached the 1982 FA Cup final, losing a replay to Tottenham.

Financial instability has recurred throughout the club's modern history, including administration in 2001. Ownership passed through Formula One figures Flavio Briatore and Bernie Ecclestone and the Mittal family from 2007, then to Malaysian businessman Tony Fernandes from 2011 to 2023, a period that brought Premier League promotion in 2011 and 2014 but also relegations in 2013, 2015 and beyond, leaving QPR a fixture of the Championship in recent seasons.
