Club history
Sheffield United was founded on 22 March 1889 by the committee of Sheffield United Cricket Club, whose Bramall Lane ground had lost its principal football tenants when Sheffield Wednesday departed after a dispute over gate receipts. Bramall Lane, first used for cricket in 1855 and football from 1862, is recognised as the oldest major sporting venue in the world still hosting professional football, and staged the sport's first floodlit match in 1878.
Initially known as the Cutlers, a nod to Sheffield's steel and cutlery trade, the club became known as the Blades once local rivals Wednesday had adopted the Owls nickname in the early twentieth century. United enjoyed their strongest period either side of 1900, winning the League Championship in 1897-98 and the FA Cup in 1899, 1902, 1915 and 1925 -- four Cup wins that remain the club's major honours to date. They spent 41 consecutive years in the top flight before relegation in 1934.
The modern era has been marked by volatility: relegation to the fourth tier in the 1980s, a rebuild under Dave Bassett and Neil Warnock, and repeated Premier League yo-yoing since promotion in 2006, including relegations in 2007, 2021 and 2024 sandwiching a strong ninth-place finish in 2020-21. United's rivalry with Sheffield Wednesday, the Steel City derby, is one of English football's oldest, dating to 1890.
