Club history
Southampton Football Club began life in 1885 as St Mary's Young Men's Association, formed by members of St Mary's Church of England in the city, which explains the enduring Saints nickname. The team shortened its name to Southampton St Mary's before becoming simply Southampton F.C. in 1897. The club moved into a purpose-built stadium, The Dell, in 1898, where it remained for 103 years before relocating in 2001 to the 32,000-capacity St Mary's Stadium.
Southampton's outstanding moment came in 1976, when a Second Division side managed by Lawrie McMenemy beat a strongly fancied Manchester United 1-0 in the FA Cup final courtesy of a Bobby Stokes goal, one of the great cup upsets of the era. The club's highest league finish, second in the old First Division, came in 1983-84 under McMenemy, three points behind champions Liverpool. Southampton have also built a reputation as one of English football's most productive academies, developing players such as Alan Shearer, Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott, Luke Shaw and James Ward-Prowse, many later sold for significant fees to fund the club's operations.
The club came close to financial collapse in 2009, entering administration with a ten-point deduction before Swiss businessman Markus Liebherr's takeover stabilised its finances; Liebherr's family later sold to Chinese investor Gao Jisheng in 2017 and Serbian-led Sport Republic in 2022. Southampton have oscillated between the Premier League and Championship in recent seasons, including relegation in 2025. Their fiercest rivalry, the South Coast derby, is with Portsmouth.
